Quality education begins with quality instruction. Equipping educators to provide the most effective instruction is vital to student success outcomes, as well as the cultivation of a tranquil school culture and climate. Many new educators begin their journey with the experiences gained during an undergraduate or graduate practicum. However, when they walk out into the world, excited to make a difference in the lives of young people, many find they struggle to reach them. A number of new teachers feel a lack of support from leadership, while leadership may struggle to ensure adequate mentorship (strongly impacted by lower rates of teacher retention in Title 1 and Turnaround Schools). The New Teacher Intensive is a professional development program designed to encourage, equip, intensely train and retain new teachers that may find the field of education to be much more arduous than expected. This training will provide an opportunity (for both school leaders and teacher) to build positive professional relationships and provide a mentoring accountability tracker to log mentorship hours throughout two full semesters. We will explore the Turner Jones Relationship (TJR) Model to revisit how our approach to relationship building sets the tone for a motivational atmosphere, enhancing the school climate for students, teachers and school leaders.
